In the earliest days of life, a newborn's vision is limited, and their visual acuity is relatively poor. They see the world in shades of gray, with limited ability to distinguish between colors.

Despite this limited color vision, newborns are highly sensitive to contrasts and patterns. They are drawn to high-contrast images, such as black and white patterns, which captivate their attention and stimulate their developing visual senses.

When do babies start seeing colors?

As babies grow and their visual system matures, they gradually transition from seeing the world in black and white to perceiving colors.

Around 2 to 3 months of age, most babies begin to demonstrate an awareness of basic colors such as red, green, and blue.

By 4 to 6 months, babies' color vision becomes more refined, and they can distinguish between a wider range of hues. They may show preferences for certain colors and demonstrate recognition of familiar objects based on their colors.

Alongside the development of color vision, babies' visual acuity and depth perception also undergo significant improvement during the first year of life.

Around 6 months, many babies achieve adult-like levels of visual acuity, allowing them to see details more clearly.

Depth perception, which enables babies to perceive objects in three dimensions and judge distances accurately, continues to develop throughout infancy and into toddlerhood.

By around 9 to 12 months, most babies have acquired the ability to perceive depth and navigate their environment with greater confidence.

A whole new world for toddlers?

As babies transition into toddlers, their visual exploration becomes more intentional and purposeful. They delight in discovering new colors, shapes, and patterns in their environment, eagerly reaching out to touch and explore.

Caregivers play a crucial role in supporting toddlers' visual development by providing stimulating and enriching experiences. From colorful toys and books to outdoor adventures in nature, every opportunity becomes a chance for toddlers to expand their visual horizons and deepen their understanding of the world.
